What music did you listen to as a child?!
We was lucky enough when growing up to have a mother that was really into some cool artist like Micheal Jackson, Chic, Nile Rodgers, De la Soul and Pet shop boys. We also had a lot of reggae, Funky House, Disco vibes always on in our household as well. We started listening to Jeremy Healey and Danny Rampling when they did the Fantasia albums and also the Ministry Of Sound albums when they fist came out. Radio one was a massive part of our child hood too, listening to Pete Tong, Judge Jules and Dave Pearce’s show on a Sunday was a great listen after a heavy weekend of clubbing. Judge Jules Saturday show were legendary, he use to do live shows from all over the uk and we use to record them on a tape deck (Haha, showing our age)
When was the first time that you realized that you liked electronic music?!
Hard to actually pin point a specific time. You could say it was when we first heard Micheal Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ Album. The man was a pioneer and so ahead of his time. You only have to listen back to his music now to realise how advance his sound actually was.
Which Producers/Artsist/Acts inspire you?
Back in the day when we first started clubbing it was artist like Judge Jules, Guy Ornadel, John Kelly, Fergie, Jon oo Flemming and Nights such as Passion, Gatecrasher, Cream, Godskitchen and Global Gathering. From the age of 16 we were going clubbing and at this time, late 90’s early 2000’s trance and hard house was a huge sound in the clubs. Then when we moved onto the house tip, artist like Timo Mass, Darren Emerson, Jon Carter, James Holden and Labels like Subliminal, Sondos, Nukleuaz, Underwater and Carl Cox’s Intec label for techno was massive. Now we look upto artist like Maceo Plex, Tale Of us, Cassian, Solardo, Sasha, Anna, Fideles, Camelphat, Argy and Gorgon city. You’ll hear their influences coming through in our sound.
What was the last album that you downloaded/bought? !
Gorgon City ‘Escape’. We Actually seen them perform this album live in Manchester. Was such a great night.
Production set up is pretty simple really, MacBook, Logic Pro x and a novation keyboard. Serum, Diva software is what we use at the moment, constantly learning new stuff everyday with serum and Diva, learning how to produce new sounds is keeping it interesting everyday, especially when you could be working on one percific sound for about 8 hrs back and forth. There is a few additions we have been eyeing up to take our sound to the next level so hopefully there’ll be added to the studio set up at some point this year. Dj set up at home is Traktor and MacBook Pro with KRK speakers.
What releases do you have on the horizon?!
Our First release of the year is on High Fidelity Records. We have teamed up with old friend and vocalist Kieren Fowkes. I (Leon) worked with Kieren when I was in Him_Self_Her and you’ll definitely remember his voice from our hit production ‘Gone Too Long’. Phenixx Ft Kieran Fowkes - By My Side is released 12th January on High Fidelity Records Our other release in January is with you guys on Trip Records. ’The Past’ is purely for the dance floor. Chunky beat, heavy bass and trippy synth’s. We are definitely looking forward to this one. Phenixx - The Past is released 26th January on Trip Records We have another release lined up but no release date has been penciled in as we are working on our own remix of the original so more info on this very soon.
Where can we hear you perform?!
From the 4th January you’ll be able to catch us on our brand new monthly show on ‘Doppler Radio’. Each month we’ll be showcasing the best in Melodic House & Techno and Progressive house. We’ll be putting up a link on our socials to the show, so keep a look out for this. Phenixx show on ‘Doppler Radio’ is on 4th January and every other first Thursday of each month 8pm - 9pm (GMT) British time.
Tell us more about the set you made for Trip Records?!
Like all sets we do, we like it to be a journey. It’s very easy to go all guns blazing and do a banging one hour set, but we like to ease the mix in. One thing we like to do is show that we can fit into any set time, whether it be a warm up or peak time set. Even though the mix is only an hour long, we think it’s important to showcase your specific sound. In this mix you’ll hear music from some of our favourite artist and music from some great labels we are into at the moment, plus it wouldn’t be a Phenixx mix without adding a couple of our own productions. Expect an hour of melodic feel good emotional vibes.
The top track in my DJ wallet currently is:
Another Life - Flaming Heart (Original Mix) on (UPPERGROUND Records) Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1zmJV8gJ9A Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/anotherlife-ofc/flaming-heart-original-mix-1 Beatport: beatport.com/anotherlife Spotify: https://www.spotify.com/anotherlife
If I could recommend only one of my tracks for you to listen to it would be:
It would have to be ‘Dreamstate’ that was released on ‘Click Records’. It was the first melodic house track we produced as Phenixx and this production was the turning point in the direction we wanted to pursue.
